3 ways automation can help workers in the future
3 ways automation can help workers in the future3 ways automation can help workers in the futureThere are prominent doomsayers like Tesla CEO Elon Musk who believe automation will take away ur jobs and usefulness as human beings - and kick off the robot apocalypse. But in recent studies and interviews, many experts have come out on the other side with a mora measured take on how automation can improve workers conditions and actually create new jobs.1) More jobsOn Tuesday, the Wall Street Jurnal made the case that in certain industries, automation has historically increased employment opportunities. The Journal cites the banking industry in the 1970s after automated tellers were introduced. After ATMs were introduced, more branches with more staff were added as well. In fact, the Boston University School of Law found that 43% more human tellers have been added in the past 30 years after ATMs were added.According to the McKinsey Global Institute, more than90% of jobswillnotlagebe able to be fully automated. Thats why Alphabets Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt cited this study when he told a Viva Tech audience that automation will create more jobs than can be filled.Your future is you with a computer, not you replaced by a computer, he said. Im convinced that there is in fact going to be a jobs shortage the way well fill them is to take people plus computers, and the computers will make people smarter. But theres a caveat The people who are getting these new jobs are not always the same as those having their jobs displaced by automation. The people thrown out of work by automation are seldom the same people employed in the new industries that automation makes possible, the Journals article acknowledges.Okay, so someone will be getting a shiny new job thats never been done when the robots takeover, but it may not be you. That ambivalence aligns with other surveys around automation anxiety.Two-thirdsof Americans, for example, believe that robots will be doing our job s in the next 50 years, but 80% of those people also think that their own current jobs at least are safe.2) Higher payThen theres the example of the giant e-commerce industry. As the brick-and-mortar retail industry faces disruption over the convenience that e-commerces automated shopping provides, monthly U.S. government jobs reports have focused on the job losses this industry has faced. But The Journal found that once you include fulfillment-center jobs, you find that e-commerce has grown three times as fast as the retail industrys decline with 401,000 jobs total being added. And those e-commerce jobs pay more. Citing Progressive Policy Institute research, the Journal found that workers at fulfillment centers earn 31% higher wages on average than people working retail jobs in stores.3) Better uses for your human brainDoomsayers believe that robots will bring about our obsolescence, but forecasters predict that that they will redirect our skills to better uses.Take Japan, for examp le. Japan is ahead of the United States when it comes to introducing robots into the workplace, and people there dont seem to have the same angst as Americans do about their robot brethren. Japan leads the world in robots per 10,000 workers in the automobile sector, and it has introduced cute humanoid robots to greet you at the mall.Of course, as the Associated Press notes, Japanese workers dont fear the robot takeover, because Japan has a practice of retaining employees for life. The Associated Press profiled factory workers who talked about working in harmony with machines. That harmonious future is what Australian experts are also banking on. In 2017, the Foundation for Young Australians issued a hopeful report that pictured a world where workers in 2030 will perform fewer boring, manual tasks and will engage in more critical thinking. FYA said that workers will spend 30% more time learning on the job and more time using science and mathematics skills. The report was also meant as a warning if Australia didnt prepare young people for this future because there are potential shortcomings of our education system - a system which continues to formally assess based on an old understanding of smart.Optimism about AISo while Musk is tweeting that super-intelligent robots will bring World War III, there are other experts rebuking dystopian visions and are offering a more hopeful take.As artificial intelligence expert Max Versace, CEO of Neurala, put it, Musk and others like him are misguided They are selling fear.

3 Times Youll Want to Quit Your Joband Shouldnt -The Muse
3 Times Youll Want to Quit Your Jobâ"and Shouldnt -The Muse 3 Times Youll Want to Quit Your Job- and Shouldnt Change in the office makes almost everyone a little uncomfortable. So when it happens, itâs hard not to want to explore other opportunities- even if youâre content in your current role. But before you put in your two weeksâ notice, take a deep breath. For a lot of people I know, this nervousness leads them to quit perfectly fine jobs because it seemed like the ârightâ time. And most, if not all, of those people eventually told me they made a terrible mistake. To help you avoid a similar fate, here are a few of those situations that have you poking around on job boards- and what you should do instead of updating your resume. 1. Your Favorite People Are Starting to Consider New Opportunities I totally understand how natural it is to get antsy when your favorite co-workers are interviewing with other companies. Thereâs an element of FOMO- should you be doing the same? The answer is many cases is no. What to Do Instead Iâm not here to tell you not to explore potential opportunities if thatâs what you want to do. But in my experience, itâs a pretty bad idea to leave a role you like just because your work spouse is eyeing the exit. Donât get me wrong- it sucks. But you will get over it! So, before you run out of the doors without a plan, spend time thinking about your current job; what you like and donât like about it. As long as that âlikeâ list is substantially longer, you should stay put. (And you should keep that list saved in a place that you can access it whenever youâre missing your BFF.) 2. Youâre Feeling Overwhelmed by Things That âArenât in Your Job Descriptionâ You wouldnât be the first person who was frustrated by the idea of chipping in on projects that youâre technically not responsible for completing. After all, you have your own to-do list and youâre having trouble getting through it because of all the extra work being thrown on your plate. In fact, the easy solution might be to throw your hands in the air and say, âIâve never liked this place anyway so Iâm out!â What to Do Instead There are lots of reasons that could explain why youâre the one being chosen for these tasks. And thatâs exactly why you should explore them for your own sake. Maybe your boss wants to put you on a track for a promotion. Or your team just doesnât understand what your workload without this extra work looks like on a daily basis. You could also be a member of an understaffed team full of people who are going above and beyond. Once you figure out the reason, youâll have a better understanding of why youâre doing it. So, pause that search and talk to your manger about it. Itâs as simple as saying, âIâve noticed that youâve assigned a few new projects to me lately. While Iâm excited to do more, Iâd also like to ask about priorities when it comes to new and old tasks, as well as see if thereâs a reason youâve chosen me for these assignmentsâ (And if that doesnât sound great to you, read this article on how to say youâre overworked without sounding whiny.) 3. Youâre Assigned to a New Manager Iâve had a lot of managers over my short-ish career. And I havenât always liked them. So, in those previous jobs, it was easy to leave meetings with my boss and think that I would take just about anything else if it meant not dealing with his crap ever again. Raise your hand if you can relate. Iâd tell you all that Iâd buy you and ice cream cone, but I canât afford that many ice cream cones. What to Do Instead Unfortunately, there isnât a whole lot you can do to change your current boss. But you can make life easier on yourself by figuring out how he or she communicates best. You might have to do some extra work, but if you can identify how your manager likes things done and why, youâll be able to move forward with a little less anxiety. Plus, if you find that your efforts donât make him or her any more tolerable, youâll know that itâs time to start exploring new jobs more aggressively. If youâre questioning whether or not you should be looking around at new opportunities, donât worry- itâs totally normal to wonder whatâs out there. But there are also times when it feels like you have to leave your current job, when in reality things are just a little uncomfortable right now. Take that deep breath, ask yourself some tough questions, and chances are that youâll realize that you still like your job.

Why I wait 24 hours before working on a new idea
Why I wait 24 hours before working on a new idea Why I wait 24 hours before working on a new idea Before we get too far into this, I have a confession to make:Most of my ideas are garbage.Okay, maybe not âmost,â but easily half.On the days I go back through my notebooks, I donât often think: âAh, what memories.â I think âAh, what was I doing?âMaybe your ideas are better. Maybe you are able to crank out brilliance with every stroke of the keyboard, every click of the mouse, every move of the brush.Actually, I wish that for you.As for me, my idea pool reminds me of a lighthouse landing. For every one or two brilliant flashes, there are 1,000 grey and dull and boring rocks. Now for a second confession:I often have NO idea which idea is going to be successful. How to Be Smarter Than People Smarter Than You - my biggest post - was clumsily thumbed out in the back of a Toyota Highlander on a trip to Florida with my family. When my father-in-law took his shift driving, I casually cranked out a viral post. This does not happen on demand, even years later.Besides, why would y ou want it to? If the work of dreaming stuff up inside your head and fighting through the agonizing process of birthing delivered predictable results every time - even if that result were massive success - you would soon get bored.I know this because I know you. You are easily bored. This is your greatest weakness and strength. At her worst, the creative genius lacks discipline. She falls into The Cycle of Unfulfillment and finishes nothing. Disappointment and frustration will always follow she who is habitually incomplete. This is why I obey The Process: Dream Develop Do - - - DreamA flicker of an idea â¦A burst of neurons in the back of your brain â¦Although the world keeps spinning around, you freeze in time and space. Goosebumps ripple down your skin as your heart accelerates into a crescendo of excitement. With every beat, it seems to say âYes. Yes. Yes.âYour senses go black as your true vision takes over. The music of the muses fills your ears. This is THE IDEA. The Chosen One. It consumes you with its temerity and frightens you with its audacity.You.Live.For.This.Moment.What to do with this radiant energy?A suggestion: Nothing.Well, not nothing. Write it down. Use a notepad or your arm or Evernote. Remove it from your working memory. Why? Because the electric shock which fills you during the inception of an idea is the dream state. The moment you rush home and begin work, you move into execution state, which is a completely different set of functions. Here is advice which worked for me:When you get the adrenaline rush of a new idea, donâ t use it for working. Use it to dream up more ideas.Write down the idea. Then write down the next 57 which come on the back of that.I do my best to keep everything. Everything. What benefits come from this obsessive idea hoarding?Probably few.Except â¦Except for the times I see a trend developing and think âdidnât Iâ¦?â Yes. I did.Except for the times I find a fourth grade journal and discover a story which fits perfectly in what Iâm working on now.Except for the times when I squint back into the distance, where I believed nothing of value existed, and find the tiniest flicker of a flame.A lighthouse I never knew was thereâ¦Sometimes the light is in front of me. Sometimes behind. When dreaming, the artist must always be looking to the future and the past.- - - DevelopAdmittedly this is the least fun part of the process. At this point, your high-flying Icarusâs wings begin to melt and you plummet back down to the cold and wet reality of your new idea:Someone has done thi s before.Of course they have. Do you want to be original? Start trying to order your coffee with nonsense syllables and words you invent on the spot. There is a name for that. It isnât âcreativity.âYes, this has been done before. Now, you need to find out why. You need to find out how. You need to find out who.Hereâs whatâs cute: coming up with an idea and taking it as far as your current knowledge and opinions can go.Hereâs what professional: coming up with an idea and using that idea to stretch yourself, learn more, go further, surprise yourself.Art is, reliably and unavoidably, an act of indefinite faith. You cannot see the end of the journey before it begins. You only walk in the direction you think is the way, and then discover the next turn. Over each hill there is a new inkling of a path. Should you follow it down or turn back? The question to ask, while in the development phase, is not:âHow fast can I get through this?âIt is:âHow far does this rabbit hole go ?âScurry down the rabbit hole like little Alice. Find your Wonderland. Dip into madness if necessary. You are looking for esoteric knowledge, the kind of information known by few and remembered by even fewer. The deeper you go, the better you understand what your idea really is ⦠and what it isnât.- - - DoEquipped with the energy to jump on an idea, but armed with the perspective to give it focus, itâs time to begin. You can now make a work of art which is new and better because you have done the work. You have studied like a professional. You have gone further than others will. But, sadly, it isnât enough. It isnât enough because many people study. Many people dream. Many people research. Many people piddle.Few do.Doing is the final step because it is transformative in itself. The act of creation is something raw and primal. It is instinct and fire and pure emotion. I often cannot remember a single conscious thought when I come out on the other side.Do not pretend the cre ative process is anything less than transcendent, an excuse to rise above the noise and the mess of the everyday. For these reasons, creation is the most addicting substance in my life.To be frank, I am unsure whether I can recommend this life to anyone else. It is my blessing and my curse. If you feel the same way, I can only say - Iâm sorry. But also, welcome.Much love as always ?- Todd B- - - Infinite ideasBelieve me when I say nearly every dollar Iâve made in the last 3 years - corporate, freelance, or otherwise - is a direct result of the ideas I have (both quality and quantity).I finally got my idea-generating process down in an ebook: The Ultimate Guide to Infinite Ideas, which Iâm giving away for the price of an email address.Get your copy here. This article first appeared on Medium.

Hiration Pro-Tip: Use the reverse chronological order to write your restaurant server resume. In this format of server resume making, the most recent information in terms of date is written first. Then the second most recent and so on. Three-fourth of your restaurant server resume will be complete by this stage. Final Server Resume: The first thing that you will write in this section is the key skills section. Write the key skills section by scanning your professional experience section and your job description for keywords. The Second thing that you will write is the server resume summary/objective section. To write the summary or server resume objective section, you will pick the highlights of your career from the professional experience section and then put them in the summary section by rephrasing them a little. Mention in the summary section how you can use your server skills to benefit the company. Hiration Pro-Tip: Write the summary/objective section in a paragraph form not exceeding 2-3 lines. The third thing to do in this stage is to bold all the important words and phrases throughout your restaurant server resume, except for the summary section. Writing Server Resume Header So, now you must be thinking: What is a restaurant server resume header? The header is the very first section in the server resume. This section consists of only one thing, and that is your name. Are you wondering what is so important about this section? It is important because it differentiates your restaurant server resume from other server resumes. The header should be the largest text in your resume. The ideal point size for writing the header is between 14-16 font size. And of the most important things in the header is the correct spacing in the name. People with a middle name tend to make the most errors while writing the header. So, here's the correct way to write it: 'Justin R. Timberlake'. Write only the first initial of your name and then put a full-stop after it. Refer to the below-given restaurant server resume example to get a clear idea of how to make the header. Server Resume: Header Restaurant Server Resume ExampleAlso, you can instead go for Hiration's Online Resume Builder which is programmed to use a fixed font size according to the latest resume building trends. Personal Information Section In Your Server Resume The section of personal information comes second in the server resume. It includes your personal information like your personal mobile number, your personal e-mail ID along with the current location of residence. Personal Mobile Number: If you use multiple phone numbers then do not write all of them in the restaurant server resume. Write only one number which you're available on 24x7. Writing multiple numbers creates confusion and takes up unnecessary extra space. When writing the mobile number, the first and the most important thing to write is the International Subscriber Dialing (ISD) code of your country followed by a plus sign (+). Give a single space after the ISD code and then write your mobile number. Then within the mobile number, give a single space after the first five digits. Personal E-mail ID: The second thing to write in your include in this section is the e-mail ID. Do not write e-mail ID names like 'cutecathy@xyz.com' as they are taken to be very unprofessional. So, make sure you use an e-mail ID name that is professional and at the same time ideal for writing in a server resume. For example: 'justin@xyz.com' looks professional and is suitable to be included in a restaurant server resume. You can also provide hyperlinks to other social media sites at this point, but only if they are relevant to your profile and are on the same page in terms of information. They should be updated properly with the information regarding your professional experience, and this implies especially for professional social media sites like LinkedIn. Hiration Pro-Tip: When providing links to your social media handles, do not write the whole link. Just give the hyperlink for them. Also, if you have any portfolios and personal websites, then you can provide their hyperlink as well in the professional information section. Current Location: The third thing to include in the personal information section is the current location. If you're living in a city that's not your home town, then write the current location where you're living and not the city which is your home town. Do not write the complete address as again, it will take up unnecessary space in the server resume and at the same time, it is of no use to the recruiter. Writing the city name along with the country pin is information enough for the recruiter to know whether you'll be relocating to work with that company or not. Take a brief look at the restaurant server resume sample given below to get a better idea of how to make the personal information section. Server Resume: Personal Information SectionYou can also opt for Hiration's Online Resume Builder to make your restaurant server resume in which you get to use different icons to put in your personal information section to make it more engaging for the recruiter. Server Resume Professional Experience Section The server resume professional experience section exhibits the work experience that a professional has had as a server. This section is of utmost importance for those people who have an extensive work history as a server. Use the below given format to write this restaurant server resume section: {Company Name} | {Location of the Company} | {Dates of joining and resigning/completion of tenure} {Designation} {Bucketing} {Cause-Effect Points} Bucketing and cause-effect points are one of the major things that can increase your chances of getting shortlisted. Let us show you this through a server resume example. Section with no bucketing and cause-effect points. Providing delightful food beverage and responsible for taking orders Working on versatile shifts Adept at anticipating and delivering Managing customer reservations Recommending alternatives and up selling items Training new junior servers Section with bucketing and cause-effect points. Customer Service Providing delightful food beverage services to 100+ customers every day and responsible for taking orders from multiple tables Recommending alternatives for up selling while successfully up selling items worth an average of $ 1,000 per week Adept at anticipating and delivering on the requirements of the customers Miscellaneous Managing 150+ customer reservations and bookings every week Working on versatile shifts including on holidays, weekends etc. Training new junior servers who join the restaurant and trained a total of 15 servers till date Now, if you've written 8-10 points in your professional experience section, it will look all cluttered up without bucketing. This will also make it quite difficult for the recruiter to read your server resume. As you can see in the server resume example below, bucketing and bolding will make it easier for the recruiter to read your restaurant server resume. The bucketing will majorly be made of the broad level duties that you perform and the points will elaborate on those duties in details further. Take a glimpse of the sample given below to get greater clarity on how to make the professional experience section. Server Resume: Professional Experience SampleServer Resume: No Experience? If you are a fresher in the field of serving then worry no more. We're here to tell you how to make the server resume for a fresher. In a restaurant server resume for freshers, the professional experience section will be replaced by the certifications section. They will write the certifications section instead of a professional experience section. Writing certifications in a fresher resume for server adds value to your server resume. These certifications can be in the area of food protection management, food handling or alcohol serving. The following needs to be mentioned in the certifications section: Certification Name Affiliating Institution Institution Location Dates of enrolling and competition of course Use the below given format to write this section: {Certification Name} | {Affiliating Institution} | {Location} | {Date (in mm/yy)} For those people who have prior experience as a server, the certification section will come after the education section. To get more clarity on how to write this section, look at the below-given restaurant server resume example. Server Resume: Certification Section Restaurant Server Resume ExampleServer Resume Education Section The education section contains all the details related to your qualification, like the courses you did, the name of the institutions, their locations, dates of enrollment and graduation and the CGPA acquired. Use the below given format to write this section: {Name of the University/School} | {Location} | {Dates (in mm/yy format)} | {Name of the Degree} {CGPA} All the information in this section needs to be true as the recruiter decides on the basis of this section whether you are qualified for the position you've applied for or not. The sample given below will provide you with a better understanding of how to make the education section. Restaurant Server Resume: Education Section SampleFurthermore, you can opt for Hiration's Online Resume Builder where all the sections of the resume come pre-arranged for pleasant user experience. Server Resume Awards And Recognition Section In the awards and recognition section, you will write all the relevant and important awards that you got in your previous work engagements, college or school. Refrain from writing awards and recognition like 'Best Handwriting' and 'Best Student'. These are not value adding awards and recognition and at the same time, they do not fit well in a professional restaurant server resume. Use the below-given format to write the awards and recognition section. {Name of the award}| {Award giving Institution} | {Date of getting the award} Opt for Hiration's Resume Reviewing Service to check your design compatibility with the ATS. Server Resume Languages Section Language is another very important aspect of the working of a server. Many servers do language courses in order to cater to foreign customers. Knowing a second language always works as a benefit for the servers as by knowing how to speak a second language they can serve and provide a better customer experience to the customers who don't know the regional language of the place. In this section, mention all the languages that you speak and are fluent at. There is also a specific way to write this section. A bullet will come before each language name. For example: English French Spanish All the languages should come in just one line and not more. This will help make your restaurant server resume stay within one page and won't take up unnecessary space. Server Skills To Put On A Resume This is the fourth section of the server resume but it is the second last section to be written. Writing it at this stage will give you more skills to include in your restaurant server resume key skills section than writing it at the starting of server resume making stages. To write this section, go through the professional experience section that is already done to look for skills. These skills will basically come from the bucketing that you did in the professional experience section and the points that you wrote under them. When making this section, ensure that your skills don't exceed more than three lines. After you're done making this section, bold the whole section and center align it. By doing so you ensure that the recruiter reads your key skills section first. So, if the recruiter doesn't have much time to read the whole of your restaurant server resume, he can decide to give you the chance to give the interview just by seeing your skills section. Bolding it will separate it from other sections and make it more clearly visible. To get a clear understanding of how to make this section, look at the below-given sample. In the summary section, write what you can do for the company by utilizing your skills and not what you expect from the company. Look at the below-given sample to get an idea of how to optimize your summary section. Restaurant Server Resume: Summary Section SampleServer Resume Objective Section The server resume objective section is for the freshers whereas a summary section is for those professionals who already have experience in this field. By doing so, you can scan the rest of your restaurant server resume to pick out valuable points to include in the server resume objective section. When writing these points in the server resume objective section don't write them as it is. Rephrase them a little and then write them. By doing so, your efforts of making a server resume will clearly reflect in the server resume objective section. Hiration Pro-Tip: Your Summary/Objective section should be written in 3-4 lines and in a paragraph form. Not in bullet points. Make sure your restaurant server resume points don't exceed the limit of one line. All your points should be one-liner bullet points. In case any of your points exceed the limit of one line, split them into two points of make sub-points. Highlight all the important words, phrases and numbers throughout your server resume. Write all your points using the S-T-A-R format. Situation-Task-Action-Result, all your points should have these mentioned. Write a one-line description of all the restaurants where you've worked beneath the designation to give information about that restaurant to the recruiter as there are chances that the recruiter might not have heard of that restaurant before. How to Stop Perfectionism From Running Your Life
How to Stop Perfectionism From Running Your Life How to Stop Perfectionism From Running Your Life In an interview between Oprah and Dr. Brené Brown, vulnerability researcher and storyteller, the following words were exchanged: People who are walking around as perfectionists are ultimately afraid that the world is going to see them for who they really are and [that] they won't measure up. Though Iâd been living this way since my eager childhood, only recently did I place the behavior. The quest to please, the self-imposed pressure to amount to something, the colossal hatred toward living in learning curves, the fear of change and starting. It left me clinging to instant gratification, praise, and results like lifelines- and I wanted all of them, all the time, without fully extending myself. I never really had to. School and all those miscellaneous extracurricular activities that padded my college applications (I mean, made me well-rounded) required minimal effort. And with (relative) success reinforcing my actions, the patterns continued. I went into college and the workforce with this deep-seated drive to be the best. Consequently, I was regularly pulled under by nauseating bouts of âthe never enoughs.â Predictable as a carousel, they spun me backward and kept me down. Until I finally did something about it. First, letâs examine my inflection point. I was 22 years old with a big girl job and a heavy dose of grief from losing my father. At work, though, I compartmentalized and consistently achieved and overachieved- to the point that even my dreams were seized and conquered by work-related themes. One morning, I sent my boss a very important deliverable- one that I poured my heart and free time into. When the workday ended at 6 PM, I heard nothing. No feedback, no acknowledgement, no comments or energetic high-five. I blew it. You knew you werenât ready for this responsibility, and now your boss thinks youâre a careless, hurried hammer with nothing but a bucket of bad ideas and poor spreadsheet management. Sheâll probably have to redo the entire thing. Did you even proofread it? Youâre a joke- 15 other girls could do your job better than you. Of course, one day later, the response came. Rave reviews. The low was lifted, but I sunk with immaturity. I wish this were a lie. I wish I were as secure in my abilities then as I am now, but for perfectionists, self-doubt is a deeply engrained behavior. I feel lucky, though, that this particular episode started an avalanche of introspection and change. That person, crippled by intense worry, was not who I wanted to be. So with courage and active practice I started to work out the kinks. Here are the manageable steps I took, and that you can too, to take strides away from perfectionism. Do a Reality Check When my inner critic gets in a shouting match with reason, and self-doubt begins to bubble over reality, I make efforts to keep myself in check. I do that with this series of questions: Are my thoughts factual, or are they my interpretations? Am I jumping to negative conclusions? Is this situation as bad as Iâm making it out to be? Whatâs the worst thing that could happen? How likely is that to happen? Will this matter in five years? At the pivotal moments of my life (read: moving abroad or childbirth), will this moment actually matter? By the end of it, Iâve either forgotten what started my funk or come to realize that I was building elaborate falsities in my mind while awaiting validation. As perfectionists, we have a tendency to play the starring role in countless self-doubt sagas and confuse compliments for deep, authentic sources of self-esteem and inner peace. This reality test simultaneously makes us accountable for our own reassurance and less dependent on others for positive reinforcement. Practice Radical Self-Acceptance Perfectionists tend to be critical of others. Itâs a defense mechanism that causes us to reject in others what we canât accept in ourselves, and the more we pick at our shortcomings, the more we fixate on those of the people around us. These strong feelings come from idealizing the perfect person and life, and itâs a menacing filter we canât seem to lift off of reality. To kick this habit in the jaw, we must be kind to ourselves. When we like ourselves, even our âflawsâ and âimperfections,â weâre much less likely to be grumpy pricks who hold everyone under a microscope. So every morning, I tell myself something I love about myself. The subject can be as simple as my morning Medusa hair, or as complex as my love language. Whatever it is that I choose, I choose it for the day, and I repeat it when I feel I need that boost. I repeat it and I believe it, and practicing that radical self-love beats the hell out of the alternative of living a hard-hearted, locked-down, and unforgiving life. Create and Trigger Rituals As perfectionists, weâre afraid of so many things. Starting new projects, making the wrong life decision, choosing a partner- and each of them share this common denominator: fear of failing. It makes us indecisive and reliant on others to guide. To combat such submissive behavior, we have to cultivate the habit of refusing to let fear dictate our every move- a trick I learned from professional athletes. As Twyla Tharp illustrates in The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It For Life: A pro golfer may walk along the fairway chatting with his caddie, his playing partner, a friendly official or scorekeeper, but when he stands behind the ball and takes a deep breath, he has signaled to himself itâs time to concentrate. A basketball player comes to the free-throw line, touches his socks, his shorts, receives the ball, bounces it exactly three times, and then he is ready to rise and shoot, exactly as heâs done a hundred times a day in practice. By making the start of the sequence automatic, they replace doubt and fear with comfort and routine. As for my progress, itâs triggered by a 19th century Russian and a cold glass of water. Whenever I feel the stuffed and helpless inability to start, I play in my mind something Tchaikovsky once said: A self-respecting artist must not fold his hands on the pretext that he is not in the mood. And with a tall glass of cool clarity, I swallow my fear of starting and begin. Laundry, health goals, sketches, writing, music- no different, one from the other. I replace self-doubt with self-respect and march on, blunting the fear of failure. Lower the Stakes Constantly basking in the glow of anticipation, we put so much pressure on ourselves to have fun- no, the most fun thatâs ever been had in the history of fun-having. Itâs too much. Itâs unreasonable to place those demands on ourselves, and we end up bitterly emerging from events and get-togethers, giving off the impression that we have someplace better to be, with people who are far more interesting. Itâs bad form and has the potential to destroy relationships. So, lower the freaking stakes. Notice when youâre pouting or disengaged. Notice when youâre the only one not laughing, or when youâre frantically pressing patterned napkins instead of enjoying your guests and the party youâre hosting. Thereâs fun to be had, but you have to allow yourself to let it in. I know because Iâve shunned it before. Attached to doing everything, and doing it perfectly, Iâve watched leisure hours slip away as I became totally absorbed in my tasks. And what room does that leave for love and lying around in happy messes? None. My personal relationships suffered until I learned not to take the maxims for success as absolutes. Ridding âshouldâ from my vocabulary helped, too. It was an eye-opening experience, realizing how often I felt burdened by the 18 things I âshould be doingâ instead of being at a friendâs bonfire. What things âshouldâ be or look like. The self-recriminations slowed as I lowered my unobtainable standards, and eventually I didnât need to be an eight-packed runner with a 401(k) and a book deal to know my worth. Now, I tell myself âSo what?â and move right along to celebrate my friends, loves, and self. Grieve Unrealized Dreams Few of us end up becoming what we sketched out in crayons when we were five; God knows Iâm no dentist-astronaut hybrid. Instead, weâre broke or baristas or barely spending enough time with our families because we work too much. Whoever we are, itâs unlikely that weâre who we thought weâd be. And perfectionists, in particular, need to come to terms with that. Since we struggle with these notions of not being enough or never amounting to anything, we need to find consistent comfort in our skin and pride in our accomplishments. So keep a list. Write down what youâve accomplished this week, month, or year, and see your worth come alive on paper. Itâs simple, and I swear by it. That deep-cleaned kitchen glowing from your elbow grease, the book you finished, your brown-bag lunches- they count! You made those things happen. All of them. And theyâve been accomplished despite the fact that youâre not the ballerina-marine biologist your toddler-self thought youâd be. Like any change, taming perfectionist tendencies requires self-examination and trust. It also demands that you donât take yourself too seriously or beat yourself up if you meet a stretch in the road without forward motion. Care for yourself in the process, and know that the only person stopping you from emulating and adopting admiral behavior is you. Photo of woman courtesy of Shutterstock.

Clear Employee Performance Expectations
Clear Employee Performance Expectations Clear Employee Performance Expectations Clear Employee Performance Expectations A lack of clear performance expectations is cited by readers as a key contributing factor to their happiness or unhappiness at work. In a poll about what makes a bad boss bad, the majority of respondents said that their manager did not provide clear direction. This factor affected their sense of participation in a venture larger than themselves and their feelings of engagement, motivation, and teamwork. Critical Components of Clear Performance Expectations The process that results in employees who understand and execute their performance expectations contains these components: A company strategic planning process that defines overall direction and objectives.A communication strategy that tells every employee where their job and needed outcomes fit within the bigger company strategy.A process for goal setting, evaluation, feedback, and accountability that lets employees know how they are doing. This process must provide opportunities for continuing employee professional and personal development.Overall organizational support for the importance of clear performance expectations communicated through cultural expectations, executive planning and communication, managerial responsibility and accountability, rewards and recognition, and company stories (folklore) about heroic accomplishments that define the workplace. Communication of Clear Performance Expectations Communication starts with the strategic planning process of executive leaders. How they communicate these plans and goals to the organization is critical to creating an organization in which all components are connected and pulling in the same direction. Executive leadership must clearly communicate its expectations for the teamâs performance and expected outcomes to align each area of the organization with the overall mission and vision. At the same time, leadership needs to define the organizational culture of teamwork desired within the company. Whether a department team or a product, process, or project team, team members have to understand why the team was created and the outcomes the organization expects from the team. Communicating Clear Performance Direction Through the PDP The Performance Development Planning (PDP) process translates these higher level goals into the outcomes necessary for each employeeâs job within the company. After the quarterly PDP meeting, employees should be clear about their expected contribution. Goal setting at these meetings should include a performance evaluation component, so the employee knows how he or she has been performing. Leading up to the PDP meeting, the employee self-evaluation guides each employee in thinking about their performance. The six-eight goals set at the meeting or continued from the previous PDP, establish performance expectations without micromanaging the employee. Deciding how to accomplish the goals empowers, engages, and motivates the employee. The manager maintains needed contact with the critical steps in the employeeâs performance plan through weekly meetings and coaching. This step ensures that employees are accountable for accomplishing their jobs. Consider following this same process with each team you establish for the same sense of interconnectedness and understanding of clear performance expectations. Continuing Support for Clear Performance Expectations Your organization accomplishes performance expectations in three key ways: You need to show constancy of purpose in supporting individuals and teams with the resources of people, time and money that will enable them to accomplish their goals. When you provide the resources teams need to succeed, you ensure the development of teamwork and the teams best chance for success. Sometimes, this requires the reshuffling of resources or the renegotiation of goals. But, the visual application of resources sends a powerful message of support. The work of the team needs to receive sufficient emphasis as a priority in terms of the time, discussion, attention, and interest directed its way by executive leaders. Employees are watching and need to know that the organization cares. The critical component in continuing organizational support for the importance of the accomplishment of clear performance expectations is your reward and recognition system. Clear performance expectations accomplished deserve both public recognition and private compensation.Publically cheering and celebrating team accomplishments enhances the teams feeling of success. The recognition communicates the behaviors and actions the company expects from its employees.
